The Golden Cicada had heard the dharma before Rulai on Vulture Peak, and for slighting the teaching at an assembly was banished to the eastern land, becoming Chen Xuanzang after ten rebirths. Wishing to send the Tripitaka of the greater vehicle east, Rulai gave Guanyin the brocade cassock, the nine-ringed staff and three bands and told her to arrange guardians along the road and to find a pilgrim.
Xuanzang set out from Chang’an, took Wukong, Bajie, Sha Seng and the white dragon horse, and crossed the mountains and rivers of many kingdoms to Vulture Peak.
Ananda and Kasyapa gave wordless scrolls at first, and when the pilgrims found it out and returned to the Thunder Sound Temple, Rulai ordered the two to bring out the true scriptures with words. With the scrolls loaded on the white dragon horse, Xuanzang was invested in the great hall as the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit and then carried the scriptures back east.
