Wen Zhong and Jinling Shengmu

Wen Zhong entered the seat of the Jie Sect as a child and cultivated fifty years under Jinling Shengmu, learning the male-and-female whips and the escape-arts and refining a third eye of divine light in his forehead. On the day he came down, Jinling Shengmu gave him the black qilin for a mount and told him to return to the mountain once he had finished with the fortune of the human world.

Wen Zhong served two reigns of Shang, and when his western campaign went badly he still called on the ties of his master’s school to bring in the Ten Heavenly Lords, Zhao Gongming and other fellow adepts. After he died at Jueleng Ridge his soul went to the investiture terrace and he never returned to report before Jinling Shengmu.

Late in the Investiture war Jinling Shengmu entered the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation with Tongtian Jiaozhu, fought Wenshu, Puxian and Cihang alone within it with the dragon-tiger jade ruyi, and was killed at last by Randeng with the Sea-Stilling Pearls. At the investiture terrace Jiang Ziya invested Jinling Shengmu as the true god Doumu and Wen Zhong as the Heavenly Venerable of the Nine Heavens Who Universally Transforms with the Voice of Thunder, and master and disciple were read out from the same terrace.
