Yellow Brow and Sun Wukong

Yellow Brow raised a false Thunder Sound Temple in the Little Western Heaven, made his small demons into arhats and monks, and sat high on the lotus throne as Rulai. Entering the hall, Sun Wukong saw that the images were wrong, and as he lifted his staff to test them a pair of golden cymbals came down from the beam and shut him inside.

Wukong butted and changed shape within them and could not get out, until Kang the Golden Dragon of the twenty-eight lodges drove his horn point into a seam; Wukong shrank and hid in the horn and so was carried out. Yellow Brow then opened the human-seed bag and took the twenty-eight lodges, the Turtle and Snake generals, the Five Dragon generals and every other force Wukong had called, batch after batch, into the sack. Wukong escaped beyond the hills and met the buddha Maitreya in the shape of a melon-grower, and by his plan became a ripe melon.

Yellow Brow came up and swallowed it, Wukong rolled and struck inside him, and Maitreya took back the human-seed bag and the golden cymbals. Yellow Brow was forced into his boy’s shape, and the Little Thunder Sound Temple turned back into bare crags and stone chambers.
