Golden Horn and Silver Horn had kept the golden and silver furnaces for Taishang Laojun in the Tushita Palace, fanning the fire, opening the furnaces and tending the vessels in the elixir room day after day. When Guanyin borrowed both the boys and the treasures from Laojun to test the pilgrims, the two came below with the purple-gold red gourd, the suet-jade vase, the golden cord, the seven-star sword and a plantain fan, and became the Golden Horn King and the Silver Horn King on Mount Pingding.
In the Lotus Cave, Sun Wukong swapped treasure after treasure until he had put Silver Horn into the purple-gold gourd and Golden Horn into the jade vase. He was leaving the mountain with both vessels on his back when Taishang Laojun came down out of the clouds, set out the origin of all five treasures one by one, and had Wukong pull the stopper and tip the vase.
Two masses of vapour flew from their mouths and fell to the ground as the boys in their own shapes. The gold and silver boys put away their demon-king armour and carried their furnace tools back to the Tushita Palace with Laojun.
