As the pilgrims entered Yellow Wind Ridge, a striped tiger sprang out of a hollow and became the Tiger Vanguard with a blade in his hand. Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie closed on him from both sides, and unable to hold them he peeled off his own hide, laid it over a rock and slipped away from the shell.
His true body went round behind Tang Sanzang in the confusion, carried him off on the wind with the horse, and brought him into the Yellow Wind Cave. Hearing that the captive was the scripture-seeker from the eastern land, the Yellow Wind Demon did not eat him at once but had the small demons tie him to the wind-stilling post behind the cave, to be dealt with once Sun Wukong had been taken.
In the fighting outside, the Yellow Wind Demon blew up the samadhi wind, and the sand passed through the mountain gate while Tang Sanzang, tied to the stone post, heard only the shouting of the demons and did not know whether his disciples lived. After the bodhisattva Lingji had beaten the Yellow Wind Demon back into a yellow-furred marten with the flying-dragon staff, Wukong and Bajie fought into the cave, cut the ropes from the post and brought Tang Sanzang back to the road.
