Six-Eared Macaque and Rulai

The true and false Sun Wukongs fought from Mount Huaguo up to heaven, and the demon-revealing mirror still showed the same face twice; they broke into the underworld, where the beast Diting lay down and knew which was which and would not say it aloud. The two golden staves fought all the way to Vulture Peak, where Rulai was expounding the dharma to the bodhisattvas in the Thunder Sound hall.

He told the assembly to say nothing and spoke first of the four singular apes of the world, among them the six-eared macaque, who hears well and grasps reason and knows what passes a thousand li away wherever he stands. Hearing his true form named, the false Wukong turned to ride his cloud away. Rulai threw the golden almsbowl from before his seat; it turned in the air and covered him below the mountain gate.

When the bodhisattvas lifted it, a six-eared macaque lay on the ground. Sun Wukong killed him with one blow of the staff; Rulai did not stop him, and only told him to go back and guard Tang Sanzang on the road west.
