Bailongma and Guanyin

Ao Lie, third prince of the dragon king of the Western Sea, set fire to the bright pearl in the hall, was charged before heaven by his father, and was bound on the dragon-flaying platform awaiting execution. Passing heaven on her way east at Rulai’s order, Guanyin asked the Jade Emperor for the condemned dragon and had him wait for the pilgrim in the water of Eagle Grief Stream on Coiled Snake Mountain.

When Tang Sanzang came to the stream on an ordinary horse, Ao Lie leapt from the water and swallowed it, and Sun Wukong went in after him several times without taking him. Fetched by the local earth god and mountain spirit, Guanyin called Ao Lie by his religious name above the stream and set out the arrangement for the road west.

Ao Lie obeyed and showed his dragon body; Guanyin drew the bright pearl from beneath his throat, breathed on him, and turned him into a horse white as silver from hoof to mane. She had Moksa hand the saddle and bridle to Sun Wukong, and from Eagle Grief Stream Ao Lie carried Tang Sanzang and the scriptures all the way to Vulture Peak.
