Smelling that Tang Sanzang would pass White Tiger Ridge, the White Bone Demon first took the shape of a young woman with a basket and came up the mountain road. Returning from the southern hills with peaches, Sun Wukong saw the demonic air from the air, came down and struck at her head with the staff.
She left a false corpse by the body-shedding art and escaped, then became on the shady side of the hill an old woman looking for her daughter; Wukong saw through it a second time and could only lift his staff through the pain of the band-tightening spell. Her spirit slipped away again and became a white-haired old man weeping for his wife and daughter. This time Wukong first called the mountain god and earth god to close the four quarters, and struck once; the White Bone Demon had nowhere to go, and fell as a skeleton with words carved on its spine.
Sun Wukong pointed at the bones for Tang Sanzang to look at, and Tang Sanzang, on Zhu Bajie’s word, still held that three human lives had fallen under the staff. Wukong was sent back to Mount Huaguo at last, and the White Bone Demon left behind three false bodies and one true shape and never came near Tang Sanzang again.
