Yellow Wind Demon and Sun Wukong

After the Tiger Vanguard had carried Tang Sanzang into the Yellow Wind Cave, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie followed the trail of wind to its door and called the Yellow Wind Demon out with the staff. The demon came out armed with a three-pronged steel fork and fought Wukong from the mountainside to the summit, more than thirty passes without a decision.

Wukong pulled out hairs and made a hundred small monkeys to surround him, and the Yellow Wind Demon turned to the southeast quarter, drew breath, and blew out the samadhi wind. Heaven and earth turned to yellow sand and black mist, and the sand hurt Wukong’s eyes so that he had to cover his head and fall back to a mountain stream. Once his eyes were healed he went, as Taibai Jinxing and the guardian spirits had directed, to Little Mount Sumeru and asked the bodhisattva Lingji to come.

Before the cave again, Lingji stilled the divine wind with the flying-dragon staff and beat the Yellow Wind Demon back into a yellow-furred marten. Only then did Wukong break the cave door, cut the ropes on the wind-stilling post and bring Tang Sanzang out of Yellow Wind Ridge.
