Seeing the golden roof of a temple tower showing in the hills of the Little Western Heaven and hearing bells and chimes, Tang Sanzang took it for Vulture Peak and urged his disciples into the hall to worship. Sun Wukong warned him several times that the temple’s name and the form of its gate were suspicious, and Tang Sanzang went into the great hall all the same and bowed to the Rulai that Yellow Brow had become.
At a shout from the false arhats, the golden cymbals closed over Sun Wukong and the small demons bound Tang Sanzang, Bajie, Sha Seng and the baggage together and carried them into the rear cave. Hanging from a beam, Tang Sanzang heard Yellow Brow say he would steam the four of them on an auspicious day, and heard relief forces challenge outside more than once, every time falling silent as the human-seed bag opened.
Only after Wukong and Maitreya had taken Yellow Brow in the melon field did they come back into the cave and loosen the ropes. Walking out of the cave and looking back, Tang Sanzang found the temple gate, the great hall and the golden roof all gone, and nothing below the cliff but a few stone chambers and the litter of demon soldiers.
