Shen Gongbao had heard Yuanshi Tianzun preach at Yuxu Palace, and learning that the Investiture List had been given to Jiang Ziya he blocked his fellow disciple at Qilin Cliff and tried to draw him over to Shang. Yuanshi had long warned his followers not to obstruct the investiture, and Shen Gongbao rode his black tiger backwards through every mountain all the same, bringing the Jie Sect and the wandering immortals one by one into the Shang–Zhou war.
After the Yellow River, Zhuxian and Ten Thousand Immortals formations had been broken in turn, Yuanshi ordered his followers to seize him. Brought before the seat, Shen Gongbao was asked whether he still remembered the oath he had sworn at Qilin Cliff: that if he obstructed Jiang Ziya again he would fill the eye of the northern sea with his own body.
Shen Gongbao had nothing to answer, and the yellow-scarfed strongmen carried him to the northern sea and forced him into its eye. When the roll was read at the investiture terrace, Jiang Ziya invested him by decree as the General Who Divides the Waters of the Eastern Sea, and his name passed from the register of Yuxu into the register of the gods.
