Sun Wukong and Nezha

After Sun Wukong broke out of heaven and styled himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, the Jade Emperor sent Li Jing with troops to surround Mount Huaguo. Nezha came before the lines on his wind-fire wheels, announced himself as the Great Divine Sage of the Three Altars, and took three heads and six arms, holding in his six hands the demon-slaying sword, the demon-hacking blade, the demon-binding cord, the demon-subduing pestle, the embroidered ball and the fire wheel.

Wukong took three heads and six arms as well, and three golden staves held off every weapon before the mountain gate; after thirty passes Wukong pulled out a hair, made it into a double of himself, and struck Nezha’s left arm from behind with his true body.

Nezha withdrew wounded and Li Jing led the army back to report. Years later, at the hunt for Niu Mowang at the Flaming Mountains, Nezha came down again with his father and caught the bull’s horns in his fire wheel while Wukong pursued with the staff on the other side — the first time the two stood on the same side of a field.
