Luya Daoren and Jiang Ziya

After Zhao Gongming had wounded Jiang Ziya, Randeng and others with the Sea-Stilling Pearls, the Western Qi camp hung out the no-battle sign for days. Luya, calling himself a wanderer of the western Kunlun, walked into the centre along a rainbow and asked only that Jiang Ziya raise a high altar on Mount Qi.

He handed over the Seven-Arrow Book of Nails, the straw figure and the talismans one by one, and Jiang Ziya bowed before them day and night as he had been taught, and killed Zhao Gongming at last with a mulberry arrow. When the Three Xiao set out the Nine-Bend Yellow River Formation to avenge their brother, Luya went to look at it and, seeing the Hunyuan Golden Dipper come down, turned into a rainbow and slipped away. When the army reached Jinji Ridge and Kong Xuan swept up its officers with the five-coloured light, Luya went out again and again withdrew as a line of fire from within that light.

Later, when Yu Yuan had been taken and could not be hurt by blade or axe, Jiang Ziya asked Luya to open his gourd, and the Immortal-Slaying Flying Blade took Yu Yuan’s head. Each time the work was done Luya rode his rainbow away, and he never took office or reward in the Zhou camp.
