A hundred thousand heavenly soldiers had surrounded Mount Huaguo and still could not take the monkey, and Guanyin recommended Erlang Zhenjun of Guanjiangkou before the throne. Yang Jian came outside the Water Curtain Cave with his six brothers of Meishan and the local gods, and first fought Sun Wukong weapon to weapon for more than three hundred passes, after which both took their world-filling forms and stood higher than the peaks.
Seeing his monkeys scattered by the Meishan brothers, Wukong dropped his great form and flew off as a sparrow; Yang Jian at once became a hungry hawk after him. Wukong then became a cormorant, a fish, a water snake, a bustard and a roadside earth shrine, and Yang Jian became in turn a sea crane, a fish hawk and a grey crane and stayed on him.
At last Wukong took Yang Jian’s own shape and sat down in Guanjiangkou, and Yang Jian hurried back and engaged him again. Laojun threw the Diamond Bracelet down from the clouds onto Wukong, the howling celestial hound sprang and seized him behind the knee, and only then did Yang Jian and the gods bind him.
