Red Boy and Niu Mowang

Red Boy was the son of Niu Mowang and Princess Iron Fan. Having refined the samadhi fire near the Flaming Mountains, he took the Fire Cloud Cave by Withered Pine Ravine on Mount Hao alone and made the local mountain and earth gods bring him tribute every month.

Niu Mowang lived mostly at the Moyun Cave on Mount Jilei, and though father and son held different mountains, the demons of Mount Hao all knew that the Holy Infant King’s father was the Great Sage Who Levels Heaven. After Red Boy carried off Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong heard where he came from and went to the cave to claim the old sworn brotherhood with Niu Mowang and ask for his master back as an uncle. Red Boy would not acknowledge the kinship and set his fire before the lines instead, and was taken at last by Guanyin with the golden bands as the Boy of Wealth.

When the pilgrims later came to the Flaming Mountains and Wukong met Niu Mowang at Mount Jilei, he raised the matter of Red Boy again. Niu Mowang refused the fan for it and fought Wukong from the Moyun Cave to the Flaming Mountains, and was taken only when Nezha, Li Jing and the vajra strongmen had all arrived.
