When the pilgrims entered White Tiger Ridge, Sun Wukong left the road to pick peaches, and the White Bone Demon took the shape of a young woman with a bamboo basket and came up to Tang Sanzang offering a meal. Wukong returned and struck her down with the staff; the demon left a false corpse by the body-shedding art and her true self became an old woman looking for her daughter.
Seeing Wukong lift his staff again, Tang Sanzang at once began the band-tightening spell; after her second escape the demon became an old man on a stick, saying he had come to look for his wife and daughter. This time Wukong called the mountain god and earth god before Tang Sanzang’s eyes to cut off the demon’s spirit, and at the third blow a skeleton lay on the ground with “Lady White Bone” written on its spine.
Tang Sanzang still held that his disciple had killed three people, sat down on the mountain road, wrote the letter of dismissal, and ordered Sun Wukong back to Mount Huaguo. The three false corpses were left by the roadside, and Tang Sanzang went on west with only Bajie, Sha Seng and the white horse.
