Princess Iron Fan and Red Boy

Red Boy was the son of Princess Iron Fan and Niu Mowang, and lived as a child with his mother at the Plantain Cave on Mount Cuiyun before going alone to Withered Pine Ravine on Mount Hao to cultivate. He refined the samadhi fire near the Flaming Mountains, gathered the spirits of the hills, and styled himself the Holy Infant King, while his mother still kept the fan that could quench the mountain fire.

After Red Boy carried off Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong came to the cave and claimed the old sworn brotherhood with Niu Mowang; Red Boy would not release his captive and drove Wukong off with fire instead, and was subdued at last by Guanyin with the heavenly blades and the golden bands and taken to the southern sea as the Boy of Wealth.

When the pilgrims later reached the Flaming Mountains and Wukong came to borrow the fan, Princess Iron Fan raised the loss of her son, drove him off with her sword and blew him tens of thousands of li away with the fan. Only when Niu Mowang had been surrounded by the gods did she open her cave and give up the true fan.
