Taiqing Laozi and Yuanshi Tianzun both took shape from Pangu’s primordial spirit, lived on Kunlun with Tongtian in their early years, and walked into Zixiao Palace side by side to hear Hongjun preach. After founding their schools they took separate seats, Taiqing at the Bajing Palace and Yuanshi at Yuxu Palace.
During the Investiture war, when the Three Xiao took the Twelve Golden Immortals of the Chan Sect with the Hunyuan Golden Dipper, Laozi entered the Nine-Bend Yellow River Formation first on his green buffalo and Yuanshi came after him on the nine-dragon aloeswood carriage; the two broke the formation and freed the disciples whose crowning flowers had been stripped away.
When Tongtian set out the Zhuxian Formation, Laozi and Yuanshi entered by separate gates and, once Jieyin and Zhunti had arrived, took the four swords together. Only when the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation had scattered did the brothers return to Zixiao Palace with Hongjun.
