Six-Eared Macaque and Sun Wukong

After Sun Wukong had been driven back to Mount Huaguo, the Six-Eared Macaque took his appearance, injured Tang Sanzang, stole the luggage, and set up a false pilgrimage party in the Water Curtain Cave. Sha Seng found the true Wukong, and the two monkey kings met for the first time at Mount Huaguo, two golden staves fighting from the cave out past the mountain gate, their armour, voices and powers indistinguishable.

They fought their way before Tang Sanzang, and both clutched their heads when the band-tightening spell was said; up to heaven, where the demon-revealing mirror showed only two Wukongs; down to the underworld, where the beast Diting knew which was which and would not say it. Neither Guanyin nor any god of heaven could tell them apart in the fighting, and the two at last fought their way to Vulture Peak.

When Rulai named the Six-Eared Macaque, the false Wukong turned to flee and was covered back into his own shape by the golden almsbowl. The true Wukong killed him with the staff, and only then did the noise of the two staves stop outside the hall on Vulture Peak.
