Banished below, Zhu Ganglie took the Cloud Ladder Cave and then married into the Gao family at Gao Village. Passing Mount Fuling, Guanyin gave him the religious name Wuneng, ordered him to keep the five pungent and three forbidden foods, and to wait for the pilgrim from the eastern land.
When Tang Sanzang came to Gao Village, Sun Wukong took Gao Cuilan’s shape to draw him out and chased him from the manor to the Cloud Ladder Cave; hearing the order about the pilgrimage, Zhu Ganglie threw down his rake, knocked his head before Tang Sanzang and took him as master, and Tang Sanzang named him Bajie.
Afterwards Bajie led the horse and carried the load, and often went into a cave with the rake to rescue his master when he was taken. At Vulture Peak, Rulai said his appetite was wide and his mind not yet settled and gave him no buddhahood, investing him only as the Altar-Cleansing Messenger, while Tang Sanzang was invested as the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit; master and disciple stood together in the great hall.
