Sun Wukong and Sha Seng

When the pilgrims came to the Flowing Sand River, Sha Wujing leapt from the water and fought Bajie while Sun Wukong guarded Tang Sanzang on the bank and went into the water to challenge him several times. After Moksa came and read out Guanyin’s order, Sha Wujing came ashore and took Tang Sanzang as master, ranking after Wukong and Bajie.

When the Yellow Robe Monster carried off Tang Sanzang in the kingdom of Baoxiang, Sha Seng broke into the cave with the Demon-Quelling Staff, was beaten and hung up there; Wukong came back from Mount Huaguo, changed shape to get into the palace and learn where the monster came from, and then broke the cave and freed him.

In the ordeal of the true and false Monkey Kings, Sha Seng first killed the false Sha Seng at Mount Huaguo and then found the true Wukong and went with him to identify the impostor. Afterwards, whenever Wukong went out to scout a mountain or up to heaven for help, Sha Seng stayed with Tang Sanzang, the luggage and the white horse; the two travelled together to Vulture Peak and were invested as the Victorious Fighting Buddha and the Golden-Bodied Arhat.
