Dijun and Kunpeng

Having founded the Yao Heavenly Court, Dijun and Taiyi went to the northern sea and asked Kunpeng to take charge of the water and feathered peoples, and honoured him in the Heavenly Court as its preceptor. Kunpeng brought the demon hosts of the northern sea in through the gate of heaven and, with Dijun, worked out the positions of the stars from the Hetu and Luoshu, setting three hundred and sixty-five demon gods each with a star banner into the Zhou-Heaven Star Formation.

Through several Wu–Yao wars Dijun worked the Hetu and Luoshu at the heart of the array while Kunpeng moved the demon banners of the northern stations, so that the starlight passed the gate of heaven and fell upon the earth.

In the final battle the Ancestral Witches broke the outer layers of the star formation, and Dijun and Taiyi still fought within; seeing the gate of heaven break, Kunpeng gathered the torn banners and slipped from the field, crossing the snow and wind of the northern sea back to the Preceptor’s Palace. Dijun afterwards died under the Ancestral Witches, and the gate of the northern sea closed in the sea mist.
