Huang Feihu and Wen Zhong

While Huang Feihu held Chaoge as King of Martial Achievement, Wen Zhong was the Grand Preceptor entrusted with the young king, and the two had planned campaigns, checked supplies and arranged the border together in the same hall. Wen Zhong campaigned in the north for years while Huang Feihu stayed in the capital; and when Lady Jia and Consort Huang had both died in the palace, Huang Feihu opened the gates of Chaoge in the night and broke out through the five passes with his retainers and carriages.

Wen Zhong followed at the news, and the two forces met beyond a pass. Wen Zhong reined in his black qilin and called across to Huang Feihu to come back to court, saying he would clear the Huang family’s name; Huang Feihu set out his wife’s and his sister’s deaths one by one, turned his five-coloured divine ox and rode on west.

Soon Huang Feihu was invested by the house of Zhou as the founding King of Martial Achievement, and Wen Zhong brought out the whole Shang army against Western Qi. From then the two ministers of that old hall stood under separate banners, and until Wen Zhong died at Jueleng Ridge he never returned to Chaoge.
