Six-Eared Macaque and Tang Sanzang

Because Sun Wukong had killed the highwaymen who blocked the road, Tang Sanzang wrote another letter of dismissal and drove his eldest disciple back to Mount Huaguo. Not long after, a monkey king identical to Wukong in face, armour and golden staff came onto the road and said he wished to return to the party.

Tang Sanzang would not take him back, and the false Wukong suddenly struck him down with the staff, stole the luggage and the travel documents, and set up a false pilgrimage party of his own at Mount Huaguo. Coming to Mount Huaguo, Sha Seng saw a false Tang Sanzang, a false Bajie and a false Sha Seng, and went beyond it to find the true Sun Wukong. The two Wukongs fought their way back before Tang Sanzang, and when the band-tightening spell was said both clutched their heads and cried out, and their master still could not tell them apart.

Only when Rulai covered the Six-Eared Macaque with the golden almsbowl at Vulture Peak did the true Wukong return alone to Tang Sanzang’s side. Tang Sanzang put away the letter of dismissal, and master and disciples took up the load and went on west.
