Yellow Wind Demon and Rulai

The Yellow Wind Demon had been a yellow-furred marten below Vulture Peak, hiding for years outside the temple to listen to the dharma until he had gained some attainment. One day, while the lamp-keeper was off his guard, he drank the clear oil from a crystal lamp, and fearing that the vajra guardians would take him, fled Vulture Peak that night.

Rulai saw his track from the hall, and instead of sending the guardians after him gave the flying-dragon staff and a Wind-Stilling Pill to the bodhisattva Lingji and ordered him to bring the runaway in. Lingji followed him to Yellow Wind Ridge and, seeing that the marten had not yet harmed any traveller, let him live in the hills as Rulai had directed, warning him only not to take life.

Later the Yellow Wind Demon gathered small demons and his Tiger Vanguard carried off Tang Sanzang, and Lingji returned to the mountain under the old order. He first made the samadhi wind harmless with the Wind-Stilling Pill, then raised the flying-dragon staff and beat the Yellow Wind Demon back into his true shape, and took him to Vulture Peak for Rulai to judge.
