Beaten again and again outside Western Qi, Wen Zhong first brought in the Ten Heavenly Lords to set out the Ten Absolutes and then watched their masters die one by one. When Shen Gongbao rode his black tiger into the Shang camp, the soul-banners of the centre had not yet been taken down.
He asked Wen Zhong how matters stood and left that night for the Luofu Cave on Mount Emei, telling Zhao Gongming how Ziya served Zhou and how the Jie disciples had been killed. Zhao Gongming came down with him, wounded Chan Golden Immortals one after another with the Sea-Stilling Pearls, and afterwards died under the Seven-Arrow Book of Nails. Shen Gongbao then carried Zhao Gongming’s black tiger, his saddle and the news of his death to Three Immortals Isle, and so stirred Yunxiao, Qiongxiao and Bixiao into coming down with the Hunyuan Golden Dipper.
Wen Zhong stayed in the Shang camp preparing altars and troops for each immortal who came, while Shen Gongbao, after every defeat, went back into the mountains to find the next group willing to enter the calamity. After Wen Zhong died at Jueleng Ridge, Shen Gongbao went on persuading immortals for the Shang camp until the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation was broken and the Mystic Gate took him away.
