Map of Mountains and Rivers

The Map of Mountains and Rivers was kept in Nüwa’s Wahuang Palace. Unrolled, the mountains and rivers on the paper become a country that can be walked in, and the streams, plants and walled towns all appear with the cloud-vapour of the scroll.

Yang Jian was ordered by Jiang Ziya to Meishan to take Yuan Hong, and after long fighting could not catch the white ape. He left the field, came to the Wahuang Palace, and asked Nüwa for a means to master him.

Nüwa gave Yang Jian the Map of Mountains and Rivers. He returned to Meishan and shook the scroll open before the lines; Yuan Hong chased him into the painting, saw ripe fruit hanging deep in the woods, and picked some to eat.

The fruit turned to bonds as he swallowed it, and when Yuan Hong tried to change shape again he could not get out of that country in the scroll. Yang Jian rolled it up and carried Yuan Hong, trapped inside, back to the Zhou camp.

Yuan Hong was taken before the investiture terrace and executed, and Yang Jian afterwards returned the scroll to the Wahuang Palace. Nüwa set it before her seat again, and the mountains and rivers within it closed with the roller.
