Twenty-four Sea-Stilling Pearls

When Zhao Gongming left Mount Emei at Wen Zhong’s invitation he carried the twenty-four Sea-Stilling Pearls. They were kept in a bag in ordinary times, and when raised they strung themselves into a line of five-coloured light.

Before the lines at Western Qi, Zhao Gongming first took Huanglong Zhenren with the dragon-binding cord and then loosed the Sea-Stilling Pearls. Their light struck Chijingzi, Guangchengzi, Daoxing Tianzun and Yuding Zhenren one after another, and the Chan immortals had to withdraw to the reed pavilion.

Randeng Daoren went out to meet him himself and was knocked from his plum-blossom deer by the pearls. He then chased Zhao Gongming to Mount Wuyi, where Xiao Sheng and Cao Bao brought the pearls down with the Treasure-Dropping Golden Coin, and Zhao Gongming left without them.

After Xiao Sheng was killed, Cao Bao gave the twenty-four pearls to Randeng. Zhao Gongming died under the Seven-Arrow Book of Nails, and the Sea-Stilling Pearls never went back to Mount Emei.

Randeng went on carrying the pearls through the Zhuxian and the Ten Thousand Immortals formations. When the fighting had quieted he took the twenty-four away from the old Chan ranks, and the Buddhist telling makes them become the twenty-four devas.
