What this rung means

A Da Luo Golden Immortal has already carried his attainment past ordinary lifespan and the bonds of life and death, and his primordial spirit no longer depends on a single body. Many Honghuang accounts let figures take part in the contests of the schools and of the fortune of heaven and earth from this level on.

Sun Wukong and Yang Jian are usually put around Da Luo: both can take world-filling form, both fought from Mount Huaguo up into heaven, and both could stand again after grave wounds on an immortal body and an elixir. Zhao Gongming, coming down with the Sea-Stilling Pearls, could beat back the Chan immortals one after another.

A fight between Da Luo adepts runs through cave-heavens, star-space and great formations, and ordinary heavenly soldiers cannot hem them in by numbers. Primordial numinous treasures, a saint’s decree and spells made to attack the primordial spirit can still take them.

Only after severing further attachments, gathering the great Dao or rising by merit does a figure enter the quasi-saint level; different Honghuang works write the threshold as severing the corpses, attaining the Dao, or holding a law of one’s own.
