Earth Immortals still live on the earth, mostly cultivating in caves, old temples or beside numinous veins. They can breathe in the numinous air, work talismans and lengthen their years, but have not yet drawn body and primordial spirit entirely out of the dust of the world.
A cultivator newly at this level first learns to give up grain and refine breath, then to ride the wind, travel through earth, lay out formations and gather herbs. Against a flood, a miasma or a small demon he can shield his cave and his followers with his arts.
The mountain schools often set Earth Immortals to watch the herb gardens, the elixir furnace and the mountain gate. While the higher immortals are in seclusion, carrying messages, receiving guests and escorting mortals also falls to them.
If they keep accumulating power they pass an ordeal or refine the body and move towards the rank of Heavenly Immortal; if the foundation of the Dao is damaged, they remain bound by human lifespans and by the rise and fall of the earth-veins.
