Western Sect

Jieyin Daoren and Zhunti Daoren travelled from the west to Zixiao Palace to hear Hongjun preach, and received a saintly seat and a stream of Primordial Purple Qi.

When the sermons ended the two returned west and founded their seat about the Pool of the Eight Virtues and the Grove of Seven Treasures, and so the Western Sect entered the traffic of the schools of the world.

When the Zhou army was held at Jinji Ridge and Kong Xuan was sweeping away its officers and treasures with the Five-Coloured Divine Light, Zhunti Daoren came from the west, met him, broke the light, made Kong Xuan show his true peacock shape, and carried him west.

When the Zhuxian Formation opened, Jieyin and Zhunti entered with Laozi and Yuanshi and surrounded Tongtian Jiaozhu on his kui-ox, while Guangchengzi and three others outside took the moment to lift away the four swords, and the Zhuxian Formation fell.

When the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation opened, Jieyin and Zhunti entered again and fought Tongtian Jiaozhu and the crowd of Jie disciples.

Outside the formation, Zhunti hooked Wuyun Xian with the bamboo of the six purified senses. Wuyun Xian showed his true shape as a golden-whiskered ao-fish, and the water-and-fire boy rode on its back and carried it to the Pool of the Eight Virtues in the west.

As the array came apart, Jieyin opened the qiankun bag and swept up three thousand guests of the red dust; Pilu Xian went over to the west, and Changer Dingguang Xian left the Jie position with the Six-Soul Banner.

Duobao Daoren was not taken inside the formation by the two saints of the west. He had already been caught by Laozi with the wind-and-fire mat before the Zhuxian Formation, and the text of the Investiture says nothing further about where he went.

After Hongjun had quieted the quarrel of the Three Pure Ones, Jieyin and Zhunti took their leave and returned west with Kong Xuan, Wuyun Xian and the disciples they had gathered in the formation.

Later Honghuang accounts go on to make the Western Sect become Buddhism, usually matching Jieyin with Amitabha and writing Duobao forward into Rulai; these transformations begin from the silences of the Investiture text.

By the line of the journey west, Buddhism has already established its order of buddhas and bodhisattvas on Vulture Peak. Rulai sends Guanyin to find a pilgrim, and when the pilgrims reach Vulture Peak they receive the true scriptures and their offices.
